Herbert Burkart was born and raised in Germany. His early family experiences strengthened his desire to oversee his own destiny. Against all odds he found his way to the US, in 1989 and found work without speaking a word of English. Gaining the respect of top management for his integrity, work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit, he was promoted to journeyman framer. By 1996, he became a Realtor with a national firm and soon became its top producer. After working six years for other brokers, Herbert wanted his independence and took a leap of faith with his then-assistant Jim Hart, to open their first RE/MAX franchise in 2002. RE/MAX Signature grew from a four-agent company to a 36-agent success story. Herbert is a devoted family man with three children. He relates his story:

I knew from an early age that I would have to be responsible for myself and that I would have to make good. I grew up in a home where alcohol and physical abuse were a daily occurrence. Although this resulted in setbacks as a child and as a young adult, I kept my mind focused on the way I wanted my life to be. I dreamt that when I grew up, I would become a physician and help other kids in dysfunctional families who suffer from the same kind of trauma. And I dreamt of achieving financial success, and one day having a happy and loving family.

Against all odds I became financially successful. But it came at a heavy price. I worked too many hours and neglected what mattered most – my family. In 2005, my wife and three children left me. My life was a mess. At times, the pain and void in my heart became almost unbearable. It was then I discovered my faith in God and the power of prayer. I asked for His guidance to find the inner strength to confront challenges that would prove more difficult than any I had experienced before. With God on your side – even if your world crumbles ---you find the power to put it back together again.

My dream of having a successful, happy, and loving family is what I strive for every day. My career continues to flourish. However, I still harbor the lifelong dream of becoming a doctor for abused and neglected children. But I have found fulfillment as a Broker/Owner of a real estate brokerage that cares about the well-being of each member and our clients. I have so much for which I am grateful.

And, I have learned the most important lesson of all: success is about balancing your personal and professional life – however, your family always comes first! To God goes the glory!

I hope that my story provides hope and encouragement to many brokers that are starting out in this business, and my prayer is that it will touch the heart of the reader today!
